What are SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels)?
A: SIPs are super energy efficient building panels for walls, roofs and floors. Our SIPS panels are made using expanded polystyrene (EPS) rigid foam insulation laminated between oriented strand board (OSB). The result is a very strong, predictable, highly energy efficient framing system. SIPs are used in residential, commercial and agricultural applications. You will also see SIPs referred to as sandwich panels. SIPs are assembled using the same tip-up method used in concrete tilt-up panel construction.
Do SIPs contain harmful chemicals?
A: Our SIPs have been tested for the presence of formaldehyde by a state university and no traces were detected. Our SIPs DO NOT produce off-gassing of harmful chemicals such as CFC's. Our SIPs are technically inert and pose no danger to people or the atmosphere.
What is the R-value of SIPs panels?
A: There are three methods of heat transfer - convection, conduction and radiation. R-value is the measure of resistance to heat loss by conduction only. The most important factor in thermal efficiency is the continuity of the insulation. Our SIPS system results in a solid envelope of rigid foam insulation. Therefore, our SIPS structure has the ability to resist heat transfer by conduction and convection (air movement). It is reasonable to assume that a conventional home would require an R-40 wall and an R-60 roof to compete with our 6 inch SIPS wall (R-24) and our 8 inch SIPS roof (R-32).
Is SIPs system code approved and warranted?
A: Our SIPS panel system is approved by HUD, and International Code Council (ICC). Our SIPS panels have been tested by RADCO, an independent third party testing agency, for strength and performance. Our SIPS panels offers a limited lifetime warranty against panel delimitations.
How do you wire an SIPs structure?
A: A patented electrical chase is factory placed in the panels wherever indicated on your custom blue prints. All chases are marked on the interior sheathing of the panels for easy identification. Electricians use a fish tape and feed the wires through panel chases without compressing insulation or drilling through studs. Our SIPS panel system also includes a detailed electrical guide within our construction guide for your electrician. The roof panels are pre-wired in the factory per your plan. When exterior wall vent pipes are necessary, chases can be formed in the foam cores.
How do you ventilate an SIPs roof?
A: A ventilated roof is not necessary in most climates as once thought. Since our SIPS roof results in an open, vaulted ceiling, the opportunity for a hot attic does not exist. Both Elk Shingle and Cerainteed Shingle warranty their shingles over our SIPS roof system with or without ventilation.
How do you control pests in SIPs?
A: The foam insulation of SIPs provides no nutritional value for ants, termites, etc. While some panel manufacturers offer borate treated foam, unless the exterior sheathing is also treated, it is not an effective deterrent. If such pests are a problem in your area, you should rely on standard preventative measures (such as spraying the building's perimeter).
How do you control moisture in a SIPs building?
A: Because our SIPS structures are so air tight we recommend the use of an air exchanger. In fact, many state building codes require an air exchanger in all new construction (regardless of the building materials used). Air exchangers control humidity and create a healthier living environment. Our SIPS systems also recommends the use of a moisture barrier wrap and seam tape.
How does the cost of a SIP structure compare to stick-built?
A: Depending upon the cost of labor and materials in your area, the finished cost of our SIPS structure is comparable to stick framing. Material cost may be slightly higher, but the framing labor cost will be lower. The real savings is realized after your building is completed and you can begin to save 50% or more on heating and cooling costs, and as you continue to save for as long as you live in your home.
How do SIPs react to fire?
A: Because of the solid foam core in a SIPs wall, fire cannot run up the wall cavity. The combustion gases of EPS have been determined to be non-toxic in accordance with the Federal Hazardous Substance Labeling Act. SIPs have passed every standard fire test required of wood based or type V construction.
